The Government selects two Repsol projects for the Hydrogen Valleys Programme.

The Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has released the list of projects accepted in the first call for proposals of the Hydrogen Valleys Programme for the creation of large-scale renewable hydrogen valleys or clusters. The 16 projects accepted will share 1.2 billion euros of NextGenEU funds, which are expected to be awarded next March, to promote the development of this energy vector.

According to the IDAE resolution, Repsol has managed to get its Tarragona Hydrogen Network (T-Hynet) project and the Cartagena Phase II electrolyser classified, which will bring the company's investment in hydrogen up to around 1.5 billion euros. Repsol's facilities in Cartagena currently produce 250,000 tonnes per year of renewable fuels from waste for use in mobility, thus avoiding the emission of 900,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Repsol and Enagás Renovables, together with Messer, are leading the T-Hynet project consortium to deploy an alkaline electrolyser with a capacity of 150 MW at the Repsol Petróleo Complex in the industrial area of Tarragona. The facility will be designed to produce 2.7 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per hour for local consumers.

The Catalina project, in which Enagás and CIP are project partners, has also been selected in the Hydrogen Valleys Programme. The first phase of Catalina combines 1.1 GW of wind (614 MW) and solar (571 MW) capacity with a modern 500 MW electrolyser, supplying green hydrogen through the European Hydrogen Network to Spain's industrial regions.

The Basque Country also has a selected project, the HERMES project ‘Industrial-scale green H2 production in Bilbao’. Heidelberg Materials Hispania Cementos will launch its large-scale production plan in the Basque Country.
