1.127 billion euros of investment earmarked for the Petronor decarbonisation roadmap to 2030.

In a keynote speech made at the XVIII Álava Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility (Foarse), held at the Europa Conference Centre in Vitoria on 15 October and focused on decarbonisation, José Ignacio Zudaire, Deputy CEO of Petronor and President of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C), has said that Petronor has a decarbonisation roadmap to 2030, encompassing 36 different projects and involving a total investment of 1.127 billion euros.

In his speech, Zudaire looked back over the process of continuous transformation that Petronor has undergone throughout its history, firstly to replace fuel oil with natural gas and combined cycles and now, in this second transitional phase, to reduce CO2 emissions.

As part of this transition, Zudaire explained that decarbonisation is now focused on changing feedstock, replacing natural gas with biogas and hydrogen, and also modifying the products they consume. In addition, the company is looking to decarbonise nine large companies located along a corridor just over fifty kilometres long (from Petronor to the Ayala Valley), including Tubacex, Tubos Reunidos, Vidrala, Sidenor and Arcelor.

The project will involve laying four pipelines for transporting hydrogen to decarbonise the industries, another for oxygen, which can be used in the iron and steel industry, and one for CO2, which will be used for Petronor's synthetic fuels plant. In addition, a fourth pipeline is planned for recycled water to be used by industry prior to being discharged into the sea, thereby saving on water consumption.
