Creating cross-sectoral synergies: hydrogen valleys, the subject of a plenary session at the European Hydrogen Energy Conference.
On 7 March, a plenary session on "Cross-sectoral synergies: the role of hydrogen valleys" was held as part of the European Hydrogen Energy Conference (EHEC 2024) in Bilbao.
Among the speakers was Jose Ignacio Hormaeche, General Manager of the Energy Cluster and member of the Board of Directors of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C). During his speech, Mr Hormaeche explained the innovative strategy of the Petronor refinery to commission three electrolysers by 2026 for a total of 112.5 MW of electrolysis (a 2.5 MW electrolyser has already been in operation since October 2023), as a basis and reference for the 52 projects and 73 companies that currently make up the BH2C, and outlined the main achievements and milestones of the projects currently being taken forward. As success factors of the BH2C, he also highlighted the commitment and initiative of the private sector, and the cross-cutting activities of the BH2C which impact on all the projects being developed.
In his presentation, Mr Hormaeche also emphasised that the BH2C is aligned with the "Net Zero Basque Industrial Supercluster" initiative promoted by the Basque Government, which has defined roadmaps for the decarbonisation of those industrial sectors with the highest emissions due to their energy consumption levels.
