Meeting of the BH2C Industry Vertical.
The first meeting of the BH2C Industry Vertical, led by Sener and Sarralle, was hosted by Ikerlan on Monday, 13 March. The meeting was focused on an analysis of the main challenges facing the decarbonisation of industry, using real cases of initiatives currently being taken forward.
The session began with an update on the latest developments in BH2C and Sener's new definition of verticals. Currently, the industry vertical comprises seven initiatives, three of which were presented during the meeting.
Sarralle reported on progress in the development of technologies and materials compatible with the production processes of the steel industry, with a view to achieving green steel production based on hydrogen as an alternative energy to natural gas. To this end, the presentation was focused on the H-Acero project funded by the Basque Government within the framework of the HAZITEK programme.
Nervacero outlined the progress being made in the H-Acero, HybridFurnace and FeXI projects, which are currently being run at the Nervacero plant in the Basque Country. The common objective of these projects is to produce green steel by using hydrogen as an alternative energy source.
Nemak, as a new member of the BH2C, presented the GHEMAK project, also funded by the Basque Government within the framework of the HAZITEK programme. The aim of this project is to incorporate hydrogen as an alternative energy source in the aluminium recycling and production process.
Finally, Ikerlan explained the impact on combustion of the transition from natural gas to H2, highlighting the technological capacity of the organisation in this field. After the session, the attendees were invited to visit Ikerlan's Clean Combustion laboratory.
