Sarralle takes part in a meeting of the European HyInHeat project for the integration of hydrogen in high temperature heating processes.

Sarralle has taken part in the latest meeting of the HyInHeat project organised by Constellium at its R&D centre C-TEC in Grenoble, France. In the course of the day, consortium partners had the opportunity to visit the C-TEC facilities and see the demonstrator in action.

HyInHeat is a European-funded project involving 30 partners from 12 European countries, the aim of which is to integrate hydrogen as a fuel in high-temperature heating processes in energy-intensive industries, particularly in the aluminium and steel sectors. The project sets out to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in these sectors by implementing efficient hydrogen combustion systems that cover almost their entire process chain.

As part of the initiative, Sarralle will work together with an ArcelorMittal plant to adapt its reheating furnace to enable it to operate 100% on hydrogen as a fuel and oxygen as an oxidising agent, since the transition from the usual operation of the equipment with air to oxy-combustion translates into fuel savings of between 10-50% depending on the current operation of the equipment. In addition, a major advantage of the transition of the furnace to oxy-combustion instead of air combustion will be the potential for reducing total NOx emissions.

Over the course of the project, Sarralle and ArcelorMittal will progressively acquire knowledge on the industrialisation of hydrogen combustion technologies for reheating furnaces in the steel industry, and will be able to adapt their designs for reheating furnaces to operate on 100% hydrogen. Furthermore, HyInHeat will give them the opportunity to join forces with the other European partners to work together on the successful integration of hydrogen as a fuel in the steel sector.
