The Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge pumps 160 million euros into BH2C's 100 MW electrolyser project, under the IPCEI Hy2Use programme.

The Spanish Government, through the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), has awarded and will distribute 794 million euros in direct aid to the seven Spanish projects for the production and intensive use of renewable hydrogen in large-scale industrial activities selected by the European Commission, as part of the Hy2Use Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI). This is the second of those approved by Brussels as part of the strategic commitment to boost the industrial value chain of green hydrogen in the EU, from R&D to the production and use of this energy carrier in the hardest-to-abate sectors of economic and productive activity.

The seven projects will together amount to an additional 652 MW of electrolysis power. Specifically, one of those selected is the ‘Bilbao Large Scale electrolyzer’ of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C), led by Petronor (Repsol), which will receive 160 million euros.

The joint Repsol and Petronor initiative provides for the construction, development and operation of a 100 MW renewable hydrogen production plant in Muskiz (Bizkaia), the output from which will be used to decarbonise large industrial consumers in the vicinity of the Port of Bilbao, the Left Bank and the surrounding area. The beneficiaries will thus be able to take a step forward in their decarbonisation processes. In addition, the production of green hydrogen locally, using power generated in renewable energy parks on the Spanish mainland, will increase the security of energy supply for all consumers who rely on it.
