Tekniker, member of the H-LEAF project consortium to develop a PEM electrolyser based on new national patented technology for the efficient and economic production of hydrogen.

Tekniker is collaborating in the H-LEAF project to research into and develop advanced technologies that enable the efficient, economic and sustainable production of green hydrogen through an innovative prototype PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) based electrolyser. The project also addresses high-pressure compression, essential for hydrogen storage, with a new efficient and safe compressor design.

Within the project, the technology centre is responsible for researching and developing advanced coatings for different critical components of the electrolyser, such as the bipolar plates, which are essential for the efficient separation of water into oxygen and hydrogen molecules. Specifically, Tekniker will develop PVD coatings by applying a thin layer of advanced material on the bipolar plates of the electrolyser, making use of techniques such as 3D printing with recycled titanium powder and stamped stainless steel to make the parts more durable and efficient and reduce production costs.

Tekniker will also develop specific coatings for the different components of the new compressor to increase durability and reduce leaks in the system, enabling it to work at high pressure (400-500 bar), a prerequisite for storing and transporting the green hydrogen produced. In parallel, the Tekniker team will study the behaviour of these materials in contact with hydrogen and under friction to evaluate their resistance to wear, permeability to avoid leaks, and embrittlement to estimate their useful life.

The project will run until December 2026 and is funded by the CDTI and supported by the Ministry of Science and Innovation through the TRANSMISIONES 2023 programme. The project consortium consists of Tekniker, Impressions Rotatives Offset, Brendle Metalquímica, Industrias de Estampación del Corte Fino, Vilaseca Consultors, The Lean Hydrogen Company, Arizaga, Bastarrica y CIA, Jorcar 2009 and Fundació Eurecat.
