CNH2 launches a portable hydrogen refuelling station for trains as part of the FCH2RAIL project.

The Hydrogen Refuelling Station (HRS) developed in the FCH2RAIL project is the first transportable hydrogen refuelling solution to be successfully operated for railway vehicles in Spain. The HRS prototype has refuelled the first bi-mode demonstrator train that has run along Spanish and Portuguese railway lines as part of the FCH2RAIL - Fuel Cell Hybrid Power Pack for Rail Applications - project, as shown in this video.

In close collaboration with CNH2, Calvera Hydrogen has drawn on its expertise and hydrogen engineering know-how to manufacture and commission an innovative HRS prototype, which has been used at three different locations as part of the FCH2RAIL project. The HRS is modular, so it can operate in different configurations depending on the needs to be met, and portable, so it can be easily transported. The HRS consists of four 20-foot containers, namely:

  • a compressor container, in which hydrogen supplied from a truck is compressed to 450, 500 and 900 bar;
  • two storage containers; and
  • a dispenser.

The Hydrogen Refuelling Station is part of the FCH2Rail consortium, a project that started in early 2021, has received funding from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and is scheduled to run until the end of 2024. The consortium includes the Spanish companies Renfe Operadora, Adif, CAF and the Centro Nacional de Hidrógeno / National Hydrogen Centre; the Portuguese company IP (Infraestructuras de Portugal); the German companies DLR and STT; and Toyota Motor Europe (TME), which is providing the fuel cell integration service.
