Nortegas to invest 900 million euros in biomethane plants, networks and hydrogen valleys.
In an interview with the business newspaper El Economista, Juan Villar, CEO of Nortegas, has revealed the company's plans to invest 900 million euros in the construction of new biomethane plants and strategic infrastructure such as hydrogen valleys and distribution networks over the next few years, with the aim of decarbonising existing natural gas infrastructure.
This decision falls within the company's ambitious objectives of achieving a biomethane production capacity of 3.5 TW by 2030, for which they plan to invest 600 million euros in the construction of around 60-70 plants. These facilities will have an average size of 40 GWh. Nortegas will also invest in distribution networks, where they hope to increase the blending of hydrogen to 100%.
Juan Villar also explained the importance of green hydrogen and biomethane for the decarbonisation of Basque industry, especially in the steel, chemical and paper sectors. For this reason, the company is committed to the development of hydrogen valleys around large industrial areas, looking to attract investment and to create a sustainable industrial ecosystem. The CEO of Nortegas highlighted the plan they have in the Basque Country, within the scope of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor, in which figures on the amount of hydrogen to be consumed in industry have already been determined.
