Repsol to invest 200 million euros in a green hydrogen production plant in Puertollano.

Repsol is taking its commitment to clean energy a step further with the future construction of a green hydrogen plant in Puertollano. Last week, the company submitted an application to the Directorate-General for Environmental Quality of the Castilla-La Mancha regional government for authorisation of the environmental impact study.

The green hydrogen plant will produce hydrogen and oxygen using the process of water electrolysis. The selected technology combines PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolysis systems for the first 30 MW and atmospheric alkaline electrolysis (ALK) to reach a capacity of 200 MW. This system will enable a purity level of 99.999% to be achieved in the gases produced, with an estimated annual capacity of 30,911 tonnes of hydrogen and 272,953 tonnes of oxygen.

The green hydrogen produced will be piped through a hydrogen pipeline to the Repsol refinery in Puertollano, using renewable energy certified by Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). In addition, the water needed for electrolysis will come from the Puertollano treatment plant or, failing that, from the refinery itself.

As part of its sustainability strategy, Repsol also plans to install a 48.02 MW solar photovoltaic plant at the Puertollano industrial estate. This will include a 4 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) for self-consumption, guaranteeing the energy supply required for the operation of the plant.
