The BH2C participates in the presentation of the new report on the steel industry by the 1st of May Foundation, which states that ‘the steel industry must commit to green hydrogen to guarantee the future of the sector in Spain'.
The findings of the report entitled ‘Decarbonisation and employment in the Spanish steel sector’ were presented last week in Madrid. The report was drawn up by the 1st of May Foundation in collaboration with the consultancy firm Syndex, and coordinated by the CCOO trade union federation for industry. The study was presented at a debate held on 28 January, which featured contributions from Emilio Hidalgo, representing Sidenor; Asier San Millán, Director of the Cluster Association of Steelworks (SIDEREX); Sergio San Martín, member of the Management Team of the Somorrostro Vocational Training Centre; and Asier Madariaga, from the Technical Office of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C), amongst others.
The report sets out three possible scenarios for the development of the steel industry in Spain over the next few years. In the first, no significant investments would be made in terms of adaptation, and production would continue as before. In the second, new energy alternatives would be introduced that would contribute to decarbonisation, such as the use of electricity from renewable sources and natural gas as a reducing agent. In the third, natural gas would be replaced by green hydrogen in the direct reduction of iron (DRI) process and the integration of renewable electricity.
