In the conference/debate organised by the Basque Country group of the Club of Rome and held in the Sociedad Bilbaína, the BH2C highlights the need to set up a hydrogen ecosystem in the Basque Country.
José Ignacio Zudaire, deputy CEO of Petronor and President of the Basque Hydrogen Corridor, has said in a conference of the Basque Country group of the Club of Rome that hydrogen will be essential to deliver the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. Mr. Zudaire added that government institutions throughout Europe are firmly committed to this idea, and reminded those present that the European Hydrogen Strategy itself considers hydrogen to be key in helping deliver the EU's commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In Spain, 79% of hydrogen is consumed in the refining sector. The hydrogen roadmap establishes that by 2024, consumption should reach 300-600 MW and, by 2030, a total of 4 GW and some 630 kt of production. The President of the BH2C added that the most promising segments for hydrogen in the medium term are heavy transport and industry, where he believes its consumption will increase significantly due, among other reasons, to a question of regulation. He also stressed the importance of creating a hydrogen ecosystem in the Basque Country which, based on specific projects and actions, and underpinned by a strategy of public-private collaboration, will enable progress to be made in the decarbonisation of the energy, mobility and industry sectors.
