Enagás reports on the delivery of its Strategy Plan 2022–2030, highlighting the progress being made in the calendar for green hydrogen.

Enagás has presented its results for the first quarter of 2024, recording a net (after-tax) profit of 65.3 million euros, 19.5% up on the same period in 2023 and on track to meet the annual target.

These first quarter results are attributable to the high degree of execution of the three main lines of action defined in the 2022-2030 Strategy Plan: the investment plan to contribute to the decarbonisation and energy security of Spain and Europe, the control of operating and financial costs, and the green hydrogen calendar.

Important milestones have been reached in the calendar for green hydrogen as a key factor in decarbonisation. In January, Parliament approved Royal Decree-Law 8/2023, of 27 December, appointing Enagás as the provisional manager of the backbone, and in February, the Government approved the draft bill to re-establish the National Energy Commission (CNE, in its acronym in Spanish), which provides for new functions to regulate the hydrogen sector.

In April, the European Commission published the final list of Projects of Common Interest (PCI), which includes all the projects submitted by Enagás: the H2Med corridor, the first axes of the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone and two underground hydrogen storage facilities linked to the backbone. The total gross estimate of the investments included in the final PCI list in Spain is 5.9 billion euros, including the Spanish hydrogen infrastructure (4.9 billion euros) and the H2Med project in Spain (1 billion euros).

The transposition of the European Directive on Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Markets, together with the approval of the final version of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), are expected to begin in the course of 2024. Enagás held the II Hydrogen Day and launched the Hydrogen Technology Observatory to promote the technical advancement of green hydrogen during the 'Enagás H2 Technical Day'.
