The International Journal of Hydrogen Energy publishes the main results of H2Sarea.
The International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, a leading scientific publication, recently selected the paper entitled ‘Integrative assessment of hydrogen-natural gas mixtures in energy grids: an overview of the H2Sarea project experience’ for publication.
The H2Sarea project is led by Nortegas and involves the participation as project partners of ERREKA, ABC Compressors, ORKLI, H2SITE, Tecnalia, the National Hydrogen Centre and Ikerlan. The paper selected for publication presents the results of injecting hydrogen into existing natural gas distribution networks, with blends of up to 20%.
A key component of the project was the H2Loop test platform, built with decommissioned materials and components to realistically assess the impact of hydrogen on current systems and components. The research covered several critical areas, such as gas injection and blending, network capacity, leak detection, gas pressure regulating station (GPRS) performance, valve and meter functionality, material compatibility, permeability testing and gas softening.
The results obtained after more than 12,000 hours of testing at the H2Loop facility show the feasibility of safely injecting up to 20% hydrogen into the existing system, offering valuable insights to guide the transition of gas distribution networks towards a hydrogen-based energy future.
