Petronor begins construction of the synthetic fuels plant in the Port of Bilbao.
Petronor has started work this week on the site to build its first synthetic fuels production plant, which will occupy a plot of land in the Port of Bilbao.
In the first stage, this experimental ‘demo’ plant will explore the possibilities to develop the technology for efficient and competitive large-scale production. With an investment of 160 million euros, the finished plant will be ready at the end of 2025 or early 2026 and will have the capacity to produce synthetic fuels using a mixture of CO2 from refinery emissions and hydrogen. The latter will be produced in an adjacent plant using Petronor's 10 megawatt electrolyser.
The plant is forecast to be capable of producing 2,000 tonnes of fuel per year. The second phase of this initiative would begin to take shape in 2027: the construction of a large-scale production plant that would also involve obtaining hydrogen in a 100-megawatt high-capacity electrolyser.
The project has been launched as a partnership between Petronor, the Basque Energy Agency, Enagás and the Saudi oil company Aramco, all of whom are committed to finding alternatives to oil that can be used in the energy transition to move towards carbon neutrality.
