The BH2C welcomes a delegation from Fukushima to further develop the good relations between the two regions.
On Friday 15 November, and within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that the Basque Government originally signed with Fukushima in 2019, the Basque Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C) welcomed an institutional delegation from Fukushima at the Energy Intelligence Center (EIC). The MoU was conceived as a tool to strengthen collaboration between the two governments, and is intended as a path of common interest for key sectors in the fields of industry, the environment and quality of life.
In 2019, renewable energy technologies, energy efficiency and energy storage were all identified as areas of interest. Four years later, in 2023, when the MoU was renewed, these areas were expanded to include biotechnology and Industry 4.0, with a particular focus on digitalisation, and the scope of the agreement also included the promotion of bilateral trade relations, collaboration in R&D and innovation and the promotion of business meetings.
At the EIC, Asier Madariaga explained to the delegation from Japan the strategic nature of the BH2C, which was set up to create a Basque hydrogen ecosystem to enable progress to be made in the decarbonisation of the energy, industrial, residential and mobility sectors. The Japanese delegation, made up of the Fukushima Prefectural Government and EnergyAgency FUKUSHIMA, showed great interest in learning about the progress (degree of achievement) and challenges of the BH2C as a project, as well as the state of the hydrogen supply chain in the Basque Country.
The visit confirmed the existing synergies between the two regions, which are promoting similar areas of activity in the field of hydrogen, such as training and the specific master's degree in this technology.
